David Bowie
I boinged out of bed this morning and immediately put on “Hunky Dory” by David Bowie. The coffee’s brewing right now, I’m sitting at my computer, and I totally forgot whatever it was I was going to write this morning.
“Hunky Dory” is just too amazing.
This album was released in 1971. Think about it. 1971. The hippies were ending, the Vietnam War was raging, huge American cars were ruining the air in L.A., and in the top ten for the year were: Three Dog Night, Osmonds, Carol King, Bee Gees, and John Denver.
Excuse me while I change my pants. Vapidity just threw up all over them.
Now listen to Bowie in 1971. Look at him perform in this video, recorded in 1972. Look at him, then look at his band. His band is very 1971. Bowie, on the other hand, is from Neptune. And this is before the Ziggy Stardust “I’m androgynous” years.
