Land of the Wolves

The internet has many uses, information and entertainment perhaps being the primary ones. In an era of YouTube and MySpace, the internet as a medium for art may jeered, yet it provides a multimedia canvas that can literally reach millions and millions of people. “Land of the Wolves” is a perfect example of the webpage as art, a photodocumentary much deeper and more meaningful than its constituent parts.

Elena Filotova has documented the effects of the Chernobyl disaster simply and eloquently through her use of “photoreportage.” An artist living in the Ukraine, Ms. Filotova motorcycles her cobbled together Kawasaki Ninja through the wastelands and dead zones of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia. For the most part, she is the perfect reporter and shows her subject without commentary.

This is one of the most beautiful and powerful installations on the internet. I encourage you to spend a few hours and take in as much as possible, and please take a moment to support her work by ordering a CD or DVD. Not everyone is lucky enough to live in the first world where wages are high and motorcycle parts are readily available.

Enjoy.
